Appeal to the Polish Parliament: Vote YES for Reproductive Rights!
In Poland, the coming weeks are a milestone for abortion rights, as the vote for or against abortion being decriminalized in Poland is nearing. We urge the Polish Parliament to take a stand for women’s rights and freedom. The Polish Parliament has a historic opportunity to vote YES on draft bill nr. 611, which would decriminalize abortion in Poland. It’s a crucial issue for Polish women, living under an abortion ban since a 1993 law that was brutally tightened in 2020 with the Constitutional Court ruling. The ruling sparked a wave of resistance: the Polish Women’s Strike saw over 100 days of protests, the largest since the fall of communism. These demonstrations were instrumental in the 2023 elections, when Poles voted for change. One of the new government’s promises was asserting abortion rights for Polish women. Yet, it still has not happened - the attempt to decriminalize abortion in Poland has failed, lost by 3 votes in the parliament in July this year.
In the US, abortion rights have also come under threat. Now, we look to Poland to honor its own promise to uphold women’s autonomy. This vote is not just a matter of policy but of principle: Polish women deserve to make choices about their own bodies without fear of criminalization, just as American women deserve to exercise their reproductive freedoms.
We call upon Parliament and Poland’s ruling majority, elected with record-high turnouts, particularly among youth and women, to fulfill their promises to protect human rights. This is a matter of justice, honoring the people who risked their safety for a more just Poland.
By voting YES, Parliament can ensure that Polish women are not left to walk this path alone. Together, we can pave the way for a future where women’s rights and choices are upheld and respected, not only in the US, and Poland, but around the globe.
